The video, edited by Maciej Ratajski, serves as the official visuals for their experimental music piece, The Unknown from the album THIS IS ALL WRONG by 111R. It utilizes the source material from Mykografia by Karo Linda, which was part of her BA thesis project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 2023.
In Karo Linda's work, she meticulously documents the growth of an oyster mushroom mycelium into a cubic form. Over nearly three weeks, the mycelium cube, placed in an aquarium, overgrows the paper, changing its color from black to white.
The focal point of Karo Linda’s work is the inter-species collaboration between humans and fungi. By examining the boundaries of this collaboration and the ethics of cooperation between life forms, it brings attention to, and emphasizes the agency of non-human entities. The concept of ‘mycography’ contrasts with Phil Ross's ‘mycotecture’ — where creative practices utilizing mycelium eventually lead to the organism's death. ‘Mycography’ describes creating an environment conducive to coexistence, observation, and analysis while preserving admiration and respect for life, aligned with Elvin Flamingo's perspective in The Symbiosity of Creation project.
Ratajski's track is part of a soundtrack to the story of the climate apocalypse, an inevitable catastrophe, the end of the human world and its possible aftermath, as told by machines from the future. In The Unknown, rough, noisy moments and dissonant harmonies gradually transition into simpler, generative passages. These passages' pentatonic sound can be associated with a naive but uplifting and hopeful spirituality. In the visual layer, images of progressive decay and mycelium growth (as it devours an abstract square that evokes the iconic forms of Malevich's Black Square and the monolithic black obelisk from Kubrick's A Space Odyssey) as you watch, increasingly reveal their other face — as a majestic image of expansion and growth of new life.
